Amazon Go Stores Come To Chicago

Written by Jon-Michael Foshee

Amazon Go, the conglomerate’s novel idea for an on-the-go shopping experience is about to open new doors in Chicago.

Dubbed internally by Amazon as “just walk out shopping,” and the first Amazon Go store launched in Seattle has been quite an attraction.

In 2018, real estate tracker Curbed discovered a building permit for construction of a 625-square-foot “Amazon store” near the Thompson Center in Chicago’s Loop. Adding fuel to the fire, the San Francisco Chronicle recently reported that Amazon planned to open a store near the city’s Union Square.

Shoppers gain entrance into Amazon Go stores by scanning an app on their smartphones. The cashier-less experience allows you to take food and household products off the shelves and “just walk out.”

Overhead cameras work with Amazon’s internal shelving technology to charge your account for the products, and you can finish your shopping within minutes, completely bypassing those long checkout lines.
