Marian Hossa. 19 Seasons. 525 Goals. 1,134 Points. 609 Assists.
Marian Hossa has been a tour-de-force on the ice for 19 seasons, 8 of which he has proudly spent with the Chicago Blackhawks, but Hossa shocked the Hockey world one more time when he announced his official retirement from the sport.
Hossa developed an unfortunate skin disorder, exacerbated by the game, and he chose to sit out the 2017-2018 season in favor of working on his health.
The condition required medication to offset the reactions created from his own hockey equipment, which he bravely toughed out for some time.
His retirement was stated plainly in an interview Hossa gave to his native Slovakian news outlet Novy Cas:
“I’m done playing hockey. I have a valid contract with Chicago for another three years, but I have only one health and it does not allow me to return.”
Hossa’s contract still has three years left on it, and carries an annual salary cap of $5.275 million, which the Hawks will be able to lessen by keeping him on long-term injured reserve.
He will still receive $1 million per year of that contract, but Hossa may be looking toward a new deal: a position in the Blackhawks front offices.
Chicago can only hope. A storied player with Marian Hossa’s experience would be a tremendous asset to the club, as it has always been on the ice.
